Post-Parents Involved: 21st Century Strategies for Integrating Schools

March 28, 2019

This event provided an in-depth discussion about school integration that brought together the diverse perspectives of students, activists, and policy and legal experts working on the ground towards positive change in public schools.

Students of Teens Take Charge shared testimonies about the impacts of school segregation on their lives. The students then hosted a panel on lessons and strategies for integrating schools in the 21st century, following the Supreme Court decision in Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1. How can we create schools that are integrated, culturally responsive and equitable?

Speakers:

  • Natasha Capers, NYC Coalition for Educational Justice

  • Shino Tanikawa, District 2 Community Education Council

  • Halley Potter, The Century Foundation

  • Rene Kathawala, Orrick
